OTTAWA, November 9, 2017 — Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament for Cariboo-Prince George, gave the following statement in the House of Commons paying tribute to the students of Kersley Elementary School for their efforts to raise awareness of the men and women who so bravely sacrificed on our behalf:
Mr. Speaker, as we approach the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, let us be thankful for all that we have.
Across our nation, Canadians will pause to honour the sacrifices of those who have given so much for our freedom. Remembrance Day serves to educate our youth and future generations so that the rights and privileges we enjoy do not come without sacrifice. That is why I am so proud to stand in this House today and recognize the hard work of the grades five and six students from Kersley Elementary School.
They raised money to buy three plaques honouring those who fought in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and in peacekeeping missions. These new plaques will serve as a reminder for future generations that freedom is not free. I am so proud of these students and their efforts to ensure that we honour those who, in their service to our country and community, have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Those who continue the fight today, whether in our communities or on the battlefields overseas, or those who suffer quietly in the shadows we shall never forget.
